How to get through airport security without the stress
The Johnsons were flying from Ottawa to Vancouver to visit family for the first time since 2019. With two kids, carry-ons, a stroller and a very specific nap schedule, they braced themselves for long lines and delays. But to their surprise, they went through airport security in under 20 minutes—with smiles, snacks and zero meltdowns.

Answer a few quick questions and get a personalized packing list that meets airport security rules.
1. Pack with security in mind
Don’t let a forgotten shampoo bottle hold you up. All liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) that you pack in your carry-on need to be in containers of 100 mL or less and placed in a 1 L clear resealable bag. Keep each family member’s bag easily accessible in their carry-on.
Tip: Double-check your items using CATSA’s “What can I bring” tool before you leave home.
2. Dress to pass the checkpoint test
Small choices can save you time.
Don't: Wear a lot of jewellery or belts with large buckles.
Do: Wear shoes that slip off easily and keep jackets and hats off until you have passed through security.
Bonus: Keep small loose items (like keys, change and ear buds) inside your carry-on to save time at the repack station.
3. Choose the right line/ask for help
Need help? Ask one of our Facilitators when you arrive at the checkpoint. They can assist you through the screening process.
Travelling with kids, a stroller, or need extra time? Look for the Family/Special needs line.
4. Arrive early and ready
During the summer, especially weekends and holidays, arrive early to ensure you have enough time for check-in, security and to get to your gate. Airlines recommend:
- 2 hours for domestic flights
- 3 hours for international and US flights Having your boarding pass ready keeps the line moving and your stress low.
