Winter travel essentials: Stay warm, stay ready

Winter travel in Canada isn’t just about snowflakes and scarves, it’s about navigating airports when you’re bundled up, carrying extra gear, and trying to keep everything organized. At CATSA, we know that winter adds unique challenges at security screening. Here’s how to pack smart so you stay warm outside and move smoothly inside.

The coat conundrum

We’ve all been there: juggling a parka, scarf, gloves, and maybe even a toque while trying to get through security. The trick is to layer. Wear clothing that’s easy to remove and keep smaller accessories in your carryon so they don’t get lost in the shuffle. Think of it as dressing for two climates, the chilly outdoors and the warm airport terminal.

Boots vs. bins

Winter boots are essential, but some styles can slow you down. Heavy soles, metal shanks, or oversized buckles often trigger alarms. If you want to move quickly, wear simpler shoes for travel and pack your heavier boots in checked baggage. Slipon footwear is your best friend at the checkpoint.

Cold weather + electronics

Cold drains batteries faster than you think. Keep chargers handy and make sure your devices can power on if requested. At lines with CT X-ray, electronics can stay in your bag, but at standard lines, laptops and large electronics need to be removed. For battery rules, check out our Guidelines for Batteries webpage.

Snacks that travel well

Winter trips could mean delays, so snacks are a lifesaver. Solid foods like cookies, crackers, or granola bars are good to go at security. Anything spreadable, pourable or sprayable (e.g. liquids, peanut butter, jams or yogurt) must follow the 100 ml rule. And if you’re flying outside Canada, remember that destination countries may have their own food restrictions.

Winter travel doesn’t have to feel like a juggling act. With smart packing, layered clothing, and a little preparation, you’ll move through security smoothly and be ready for whatever the season brings.
