Handheld fans made of plastic, wood, or fabric are generally allowed. If your fan has a built-in battery—especially lithium-ion—it must meet airline and CATSA rules for battery-powered devices. In most cases, battery-powered fans are allowed in carry-on but may be restricted in checked baggage. Check with your air carrier if you're unsure.
Attention: Specific guidelines you need to follow for built-in batteries:
- Battery type and size: Ensure the built-in battery is a lithium battery with a watt-hour (Wh) rating of less than 100 Wh. If the battery is between 100 Wh and 160 Wh, you can still bring it, but you will need approval from the airline.
- Carry-on vs. checked baggage: Batteries with a rating of less than 100 Wh can be carried in both carry-on and checked baggage. However, batteries between 100 Wh and 160 Wh are generally allowed only in carry-on baggage and require airline approval.
- Safety precautions: Make sure the battery is properly installed in the device. If you have spare batteries, they should be individually protected to prevent short-circuiting. This can be done by keeping them in their original packaging, placing tape over the terminals, or using a protective case.
